Freestone County Economy

Freestone County’s economy is a balanced mix of agriculture, energy, and manufacturing, reflecting its diverse industrial base. Agriculture remains a cornerstone, with the county ranking as the 20th-largest in Texas for poultry and egg sales, generating $40.36 million in 2017, alongside significant beef cattle production. The energy sector thrives with the Jewett Mine, supplying lignite to the Limestone Electric Generating Station, and the Freestone Energy Center, a natural gas-fired facility near Fairfield. Manufacturing is growing, particularly in Fairfield’s Industrial Park North, home to companies like Norwesco and Baker Hughes, with the upcoming Fairfield Industrial Park South set to expand opportunities. Despite a 9.5% unemployment rate in November 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the county’s strategic location and resources suggest potential for growth, though reliance on traditional industries raises questions about long-term diversification.

Location and Climate of Freestone County

Located in East Central Texas, Freestone County spans 888 square miles, bordered by Anderson, Leon, Limestone, Navarro, and Henderson counties, with Fairfield as its county seat, roughly 80 miles southeast of Dallas. The Trinity River provides drainage for most of the county, while the Navasota River handles a small southwestern portion, with elevations ranging from 600 to 900 feet. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers averaging 95°F in July and moderate winters with January lows around 37°F, supported by 40 inches of annual rainfall, peaking in spring and fall. October, April, and May are the most pleasant months, ideal for enjoying outdoor spots like Fairfield Lake, though July and August can be uncomfortably hot. The 263-day growing season supports agriculture, but climate change poses risks of increased drought and heatwaves.
