Kurten, Texas, was founded in the mid-1800s by Henry Kurten, a German soldier who settled in Brazos County after his military service. In 1864, he purchased part of a Mexican land grant and invited other German immigrants to join him, often helping them pay for passage through work on his farm. Kurten donated land for important community buildings, including two German churches, a black church, two cemeteries, and a Masonic hall, which helped shape the town’s early identity. Agriculture was central to Kurten’s economy and way of life. Although it existed as a community for many years, Kurten was officially incorporated as a town in 2000. Today, it remains a small, close-knit community that honors its heritage through local traditions and historic sites, reflecting the enduring legacy of its founders and settlers.
