Leon County Area Guide

Welcome to the Leon County Area Guide — your trusted resource for exploring life in this distinct corner of Central Texas. With just over 16,000 residents, Leon County offers a rural lifestyle rooted in strong community values, open landscapes, and fertile river bottom land.

While some might try to label it as East Texas, locals will be quick to say, “this isn’t the piney woods” — and they’re right. Towns like Centerville, Buffalo, Jewett, and Hilltop Lakes reflect more of the relaxed, independent spirit Central Texas is known for. Whether you're looking for space to roam or room to grow, Leon County delivers the kind of quiet, connected living that’s getting harder to find.

Culture and Activities in Leon County

Leon County knows how to bring people together. The Fourth of July parades and fireworks in Centerville and Hilltop Lakes are longtime favorites — drawing families from across the county for small-town celebration done right. Events like the Buffalo Stampede, seasonal festivals, and school fundraisers keep the calendar full and the community connected.

You’ll also find a bowling alley in Centerville, local golf courses like Hilltop Lakes, and no shortage of ways to spend time with neighbors or unwind outdoors. Whether you're into community events or a more laid-back day on the course, there’s more to do around here than most folks expect.

Leon County Economy

Agriculture is still at the heart of Leon County’s economy — and with rich, river bottom soil on both the Trinity and Navasota sides, it makes sense. Cattle, hay, and poultry operations are common here, supported by the Leon County AgriLife Extension and a community that knows the value of hard work and good land.

At the same time, we’ve seen more families bring in outside income through remote jobs, local businesses, or by turning their property into income-producing land — like short-term rentals, homesteads, or small-scale ag projects. Each town has its own Chamber or EDC that helps small businesses get off the ground and stay connected. If you asked most buyers why they’re investing in this area, many would tell you: “I’m buying land now because I won’t be able to afford it later.”

Leon County isn’t booming with big box stores or industrial parks — and that’s the appeal. It’s a place where you can run cattle, build something of your own, and still be close enough to town for everything you need.

Location and Climate of Leon County

Leon County sits along I-45 between Dallas and Houston, making it easy to get just about anywhere while still enjoying the peace and privacy of rural life. Centerville is the county seat and sits almost exactly halfway between the two cities, which is part of what draws both full-time residents and weekenders looking for land or a slower pace.

The climate here is humid subtropical — hot summers, mild winters, and enough rain (around 42 inches a year) to keep pastures green and gardens productive. Spring and fall tend to be local favorites, with just enough cool mornings and sunny afternoons to enjoy time outdoors. Whether you’re commuting, retiring, or planting roots, Leon County’s location and year-round growing conditions make it a smart choice for all kinds of lifestyles.
